Default to single elimination
Rec playoffs exist to end the season in front of people who still care. Single elimination is easy to explain, easy to staff, and easy to publish. Double elimination and group-plus-knockout formats eat venues.
Seeding from the regular season
Seed from the standings table you already trust. Standard pairing puts the highest remaining seed against the lowest (1 vs 8, 4 vs 5, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 in an eight-team field). If you invite 6 or 12 teams, byes belong to the top seeds—not to whoever emailed first.

- Single-elimination brackets seeded from regular-season standings. Standard seed pairing (1 vs 8, 4 vs 5, and so on) with byes when the field is not a power of two.
- Should a rec league use double elimination?
- Usually no. Double elimination doubles ice or gym demand. Most amateur seasons are better with a clean single-elimination cup after a round-robin.
